Alice 828 MIC inputs for line level instruments.

Alice 828 MIC inputs for line level instruments.

Postby Googoo » Fri Jul 13, 2018 8:49 pm

Hi, I was wondering if I can take advantage of the MIC transformer inputs on the Alice 828 with line level synths/samplers/audio interface outputs?
Would I have to DI them or is it a case of just adjusting the output volume from my chosen keyboard etc?
Thanks.
Gary.

The only correct way to use the transformer inputs on the 828 with line level sources is to use a 20dB XLR pad. The mic input is OK for signals up to -20dB but the low frequencies suffer if you push them too hard.
You can get a suitable pad from CPC for about £7. The CPC order code is AV17579. :geek:

Hi Ted, another question. What's the best way of cleaning crackling pots and faders on the 828? Products etc? Thanks.

A DI box like the op asked is also a "correct way" to connect -10dbv Line level sources to a Microphone Preamplifier's input. The DI will respect both Levels and Impedances

Most DI's have a PAD at the input, 0db's for Guitar/Bass, -20db's for Line level -10dbv (keyboards, samplers) and -40dbs for Speaker Level.

Anyway, connecting a Line level device directly to the Alice Microphone input is also quite nice if you want to distort or dirty up that line level source, expect distortion and a limited frequency response, but it might be nice for specific tasks. The 828 distorts nicelly

My response was strictly accurate.....
But then again...'If it sounds right, it IS right!' :D
